Reflecting on What You Have and Letting Go of Control
There was a time in my life when I was always focused on what was next—the next job, the next goal, the next big moment that I thought would finally make me happy. I’d look at my life, compare it to others, and feel like I was always coming up short. It felt like everyone else had it figured out, and I was stuck in this endless loop of chasing the next thing.
But over time, I realized something: I was so focused on where I wasn’t, that I was completely overlooking where I was.
Learn to Appreciate What’s Already Here
It wasn’t until I started practicing gratitude that I felt a real shift. And trust me, it didn’t happen overnight. I started small—writing down a couple of things each day that I was grateful for, no matter how minor they seemed. At first, it felt kind of silly. For example, what difference would writing down “I had a great cup of coffee” or “the weather was nice today” really make?
But slowly, those small moments started to add up. I noticed that even on the days when things fell off, there was still something good to hold onto. I started seeing the beauty in the mundane—the fact that I had a roof over my head, friends who cared about me, or even just the comfort of my favourite blanket on a stressful day. It wasn’t that my life magically changed overnight, but my perspective did. And that made all the difference.
It wasn’t about pretending everything was perfect. There were still challenges, frustrations, and things I wanted to achieve. But when I took a step back and appreciated what I already had, I felt a sense of calm that I hadn’t experienced before. I realized I didn’t need to wait for some future moment to be happy—I could find joy right here, right now.
Trusting the Universe When Things Don’t Go as Planned
Of course, even with gratitude, life doesn’t always go the way you expect. There have been plenty of times when things didn’t work out how I’d hoped—a project at work that fell through, relationships that didn’t last, opportunities that passed me by. In those moments, it’s easy to feel like everything is falling apart. I know I did.
But somewhere along the way, I started to let go of the idea that I had to control everything. I realized that sometimes, the best things happen when you don’t have it all figured out. When I started trusting that the universe had a plan, even if I couldn’t see it yet, it took a lot of pressure off. Instead of panicking when things didn’t go according to my plan, I started thinking, “Okay, maybe this is happening for a reason." Maybe there’s something better coming that I just don’t see yet.”
It was hard at first. I like to know what’s coming next, and trusting the universe felt like jumping without a parachute. But over time, I started seeing that some of the biggest disappointments in my life led to things that were so much better than I could have imagined.
The Moment It All Clicked
I remember one specific moment when everything started to make sense. I had just missed out on a job I wanted, and I was devastated. I had convinced myself that this was the perfect opportunity, and when it didn’t happen, I felt lost. But a few months later, another job came along—one that I hadn’t even considered—and it turned out to be a much better fit, both for my skills and my lifestyle.
Looking back, I realized that if I had gotten that first job, I wouldn’t have been open to this new opportunity. The universe was working things out in a way I couldn’t see at the time, and it was only by trusting that things would unfold as they were meant to that I could fully embrace what came next.
Gratitude and Trust
It’s funny how gratitude and trust seem to go hand in hand. The more I started to appreciate the present, the easier it became to trust the future. And the more I trusted that things were happening for a reason, the more I found to be grateful for—even in the moments when life wasn’t perfect.
There’s a sense of peace that comes with that mindset. It doesn’t mean everything always works out the way you want it to. I still face challenges, and there are still times when I struggle to see the bigger picture. But now, when things don’t go my way, I remind myself of all the times things did work out, often in ways I never expected. It helps me stay grounded in gratitude and keeps me open to whatever the universe has in store.
Bringing It Into Everyday Life
So, if you’re feeling like I did—constantly striving for the next thing, or anxious about what’s ahead—I encourage you to try what worked for me:
Start a Gratitude Practice: It doesn’t have to be big. Just take a moment each day to think about a few things you’re thankful for, even if they’re small. It’s amazing how focusing on the positives can shift your mood and perspective.
Let Go of Control: I know, easier said than done. But try to remind yourself that it’s okay not to have everything figured out. Trust that the universe guides you, even if the path isn’t unclear.
Reflect on Past Surprises: Think about a time when something didn’t go as planned, but worked out for the best. That simple reflection can help you trust that things will come together again in the future.
Celebrate the Present: We spend so much time looking forward but take a second to recognize where you are right now. Celebrate your progress, even if you’re not where you want to be yet.
Trusting the Journey
Appreciating what I have and trusting the universe has helped me find a sense of peace I didn’t know was possible. It’s not that I have everything figured out (spoiler: I don’t), but I’ve learned that it’s okay to be a work in progress. Life has a funny way of surprising us, and when you approach it with gratitude and trust, it’s a lot easier to enjoy the ride.
